4 Things To Do Before Summer's Over

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

It's the end of July and I couldn't even tell you where me entire summer's gone. Anyone you talk to is trying to jam pack all the summer-y things into the few short weeks we've got left, before we're forced to pull out the parkas and boots- which, to be fair,  does comes with some top notch outfits... very small trade off. I know.

1. Take a Picnic to the River Valley (or your backyard!)

This is one of those things you always say you're going to do, and have the most amazing intentions of organizing, but it never happens. Until now! Grab a blanket, pick up your favourite snacks, call up your friends and make it happen. A picnic doesn't have to be this daunting Pinterest curated event that most people imagine when you think of a picnic. Keep it simple, casual and fun so you can actually enjoy the day you're having and you won't have to fuss over the aesthetic of the picnic.

Some of my favourite picnic snacks are candy, usually of the sour variety, some chips, cookies or crackers, fresh fruits usually in watermelon or berry form. Oh! And you've always got to have something to drink too. Arizona tea is the ultimate picnic drink- 99cents for the best summer drink out there!

2. Grab a Morning Coffee & Breakfast

I say 'coffee' but I actually hate coffee. I really mean the overarching term 'grab a coffee'.  In Edmonton we are so lucky to have some of the most amazing little coffee shops scattered around or city. Nine times out of 10, you'll see me either at The Tea Girl, which has been somewhere I've been going since I was in the seventh grade with my absoltue favourite tea selections and hippy vibes, as well as Little Brick, which has taken a portion of my heart with their amazing breakfast, coffee and most importantly their adorable outdoor patio/sitting area.

3. Walk Down to Heritage Days
Heritage days are one of those things I look forward to every summer. Walking down to Hawrelak park, being able to go around to all of the different cultural tents enjoying the most delicious and authentic food is just the best way to spend the last bit of your summer, especially when it's a nice and sunny day! This year they are starting July 30th and run until August 2nd- you can either pre-order tickets online or just wait to purchase them there. Make sure if you do venture down, bring a non perishable food donation with you for the Edmonton Food Bank!
My all time favourite Heritage Day's snacks are for sure mango on a stick with spices, elephant ears, green onion cakes and spring rolls. Always so good.

4. Read a Good Book

Typical. I know. But hear me out.

When you find a book that you love, theres nothing else you'd rather be doing than sitting on your patio, or in the river valley and just reading. Cover to cover undisturbed reading. I was given a book to read recently called 'Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear'  by Elizabeth Gilbert. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has any sort of creativity in them-and it's a super easy read!

One of my favourite things to read are cook books and baking books, even if I'm not even planning to make anything. They give me inspiration, beautiful pictures I think about attempting to recreate and you don't really have to think too hard either when you're flipping though. Sometimes it's nice to just stop and escape into something else other than the internet for a while.
