Wednesday Is A Craft Day

Friday, May 27, 2016

Often, Pam and I find these really neat ideas floating on the web, send them to each other and say "Oh wow, we need to do this for the blog!"  I'd say between the two of us, we're pretty darn crafty and really good at creating things... but that doesn't mean they always look as amazing as we expect them to. Fast forward to Wednesday, when we made something that actually looked exactly as we expected it to, which if you know anything about DIYs or internet crafts it's a very rare occurrence.
Here is the run down on how to make beautifully marbled cards we saw on honestlywtf using shaving cream and gel food colouring!

-The Things You'll Need To Get Started-

White foaming shaving cream (no, gel shaving cream won't work)
Card stock a bit thicker than normal paper & gel food colouring
Dish large enough to fit the cards & shaving cream
Skewer or something similar like a pencil even
Ruler or straight edge with the ability to scrape

Start by squirting a generous amount of shaving cream into your dish. We ended up buying two cans of cream because we weren't sure how much we'd end up using, but a little really goes a long way! One can will totally be fine.

Take a spoon and just quickly smooth out your creamy surface and add in just 1-2 drops of colouring. For the first few cards you make, stick to one colour so you can get the hang of it and as you become a pro feel free to experiment with some colours.

Grab your skewer and start swirling and mixing the color into the shaving cream. This is where your design is going to come from, so be strategic and don't over do it here. You want it to have a marbled effect so keeping some of the shaving cream unmixed is totally fine!

Once you're satisfied with what you've got, it's time to dip your cards into the oasis of colour you've just created.
*Protip we wished we used*
Having green tape, or even masking tape to border off where you don't want the food colouring to go will make a much neater card, and you won't end up with tiny smudges

Lightly squish the card into the cream and use your fingers to make sure a majority of it is touching the shaving cream, and peel it up when you're ready. A bit of a suction is created when you lift up the card smushing around your design a bit, but don't panic! It adds to the marbled effect.

Grabbing your ruler or straight edge, you're going to start at one corner and slowly scrape away the shaving cream. As you swipe it away, the most beautiful and un-suspecting design will appear. This is where Pam and I were seriously floored, because this is exactly how it's supposed to turn out, and even us, who are they clumsiest and messiest crafters had these most amazing cards in front of us!

Go check out the really quick video of it over here!

You can take a paper towel and lightly dab off the remaining little bit of shaving cream that might still be on there. They dry pretty quick, so make sure to pop them under a heavy book to keep the edges flat! We did try a few envelopes as well, but because they were quite thin, they ended up being almost too soggy. If you have thicker envelopes though it would work perfectly! Also, double dipping looks terrible and ruins a perfectly good card... so maybe try and avoid that!

This is probably one of the cooler things we've done lately and it is honestly so easy! If you're looking for something to do this summer, we would without a doubt recommend you give it a go!
